Students must select one elective course with the supervision of the GJEC Coordinator. Below are examples of recommended courses and their descriptions. With approval of the GJEC Coordinator, other courses may be accepted as electives.

AEC 829 The Economics of Environmental Resources
Economic principles related to environmental conflicts and public policy alternatives. Applications to water quality, land use, conservation, development, and global environmental issues.

ANP 430 Culture, Resources, and Power
Contemporary anthropological perspectives on culture as it relates to power and the use of resources. Anthropological analysis of related contemporary issues.

ANP 431 Gender, Environment, and Development
Relationship among processes of environmental change, development, and gender differentiation. Anthropological perspectives. Case studies of major theoretical approaches. Gendered participation environmental movements, organizations.

ANP 831 Seminar in Cultural Ecology
Anthropological theories for understanding culture as system of mediation between humans and environment. Cultural ecological approaches applied to sociocultural change and stability.

ANP 836 Theories of Sociocultural Change: Culture, Resources, and Power
Contemporary anthropological perspectives on culture as it relates to power and the use of resources. Anthropological analysis of related contemporary issues.

FOR 464 Natural Resource Economics and Social Science
Application of economic and social science principles and techniques to production and consumption of natural resources. Benefit-cost analysis. Regional impact analysis. Social impact assessment.

FW/WS 404 Women and the Law
Law in the United States as a vehicle for structuring and maintaining women's social roles, and for social change.

FW 810 Human Dimensions Research in Fisheries and Wildlife
Methods of surveying, educating, and involving the public to achieve fish and wildlife management goals. Review of human dimensions research and current case studies.

GEO 435 Geography of Health and Disease
Spatio-environmental concepts and techniques applied to health problems. Disease transmission cycles, community nutrition, and health-care planning.

GEO 454 Geography of Environment and Development
Spatial patterns and processes associated with regional development in selected world areas.

GEO 873 Seminar in Human-Environment Geography
Research on topics in human-environment geography.

PRR 842 Parks and Protected Areas Policy and Management
History of policies related to parks and protected areas. Current state and federal policies and agencies. Interaction between policy and management. Current US and international laws and applications.

RD 826 International Development and Sustainability
Environmental, economic, political, legal, management, and cultural components of sustainable development.

SOC 452 Environment and Society
Environmental conditions and social organization. Relation to resources, pollution, energy, and risks. Growth and limits to growth. Environmental attitudes, actions, movements, and regulation.

SOC 452L Internship in Environment and Society
A field internship experience with an organization whose goals and activities emphasize environmental policies and programs.

SOC 833 Gender and Power
Theory and research on gender and sexual inequality in socially-based systems of production and reproduction. Global and national gender inequalities in selected institutional settings.

SOC 860 Rural Societies in Transition
Research and policy issues in rural studies. Comparative perspectives on agricultural restructuring, household strategies, community transformations, and sustainable development.

SOC/RD 862 Farming Systems and Rural Development
Farming systems research and its place in rural development strategies. Sociological and resource analysis of small scale family farming systems.

SOC 864 Social Ecology
Interaction of technology, environment, social organization, population, and culture in processes of social evolution. Role of organization and structure in determining sustainability of developing and industrialized societies.

SOC 865 Environmental Sociology
Effects of attitudes, social structure, and policy on the causes and consequences of natural resource depletion, pollution, energy use, growth, and technological risks. Response of movements and policies to environmental problems.

SOC 931 Topics in Structural Inequalities: Gender/Development/Globalization
Current research on socioeconomic class, gender inequality, racial and ethnic inequality, power structures, social conflict, urban dynamics, or social change.

SOC 950, Sec. 001 Topics in Rural and Environmental Studies: Environmental Health
This course takes an interdisciplinary, international approach to understanding the social, biological, and political characteristics of environmental health.

SOC 954 Techniques of Population Analysis
Global sources of demographic data. Characteristics of populations. Life table modeling, fertility, mortality, and migration. Reliability of data and validity of models.

SOC 970 Topics in Wellbeing and Health: Political Economy of Womens Health
Topics such as family work and stress, risk and uncertainty, social epidemiology, and life course.

WS 401 Feminist Theory
Integrative and multidisciplinary approaches to theory in women's studies. Conceptualization of sex and gender and the subordination of women. Feminist critique of theories of knowledge. Comparison of evolving feminist theories.

WS 403 Women and Change in Developing Countries
Effects of economic, political, and social change on women in developing countries. Interrelationships of gender, class, race, and nationality.
